Project Blue Book Case File
Steelville, MissouriSeptember 1962
Summary
In September 1962, a resident of Steelville, Missouri reported seeing unidentified objects that appeared to come from the sky and land in trees near their home. The same objects also landed on nearby Highway 8. According to the witness, this happened frequently.
The witness claimed that when the objects landed, they caused interference with their television set, disrupting the picture. The objects moved from south to west and were visible for what the report describes as "six to eight in the evening," though the exact timing is unclear in the document. The witness stated they could see the object on the TV screen when it landed.
The Air Force Office of Information received the original report in a letter to the President. An internal memo from September 24, 1962 recommended that a Missouri-based investigator look into the sighting. The Office of Special Investigations (OSI) conducted the investigation. According to the case file, the OSI report indicated that the witness was "mentally disturbed in connection with these sightings."
The Air Force's official evaluation checked the box for "possibly balloon" on the case record card. The comments section notes that TV activity was "probably due to aircraft interference from scheduled air lines," and suggests that other interpretations of the visual sightings could be due to hallucination. The case file reproduces 8 pages as held by the National Archives.
