Project Blue Book Case File
St. Paul, Minn., August 1952August 1952
Summary
On August 9, 1952, at 10:15 p.m., a resident of St. Paul, Minnesota saw an unidentified elliptical object flying at high speed from southeast to northwest. The observer, standing outdoors at home, watched the object for 10 to 15 seconds before it vanished abruptly. The object resembled a jet aircraft but had no visible wings. It appeared to be about 10 to 12 times as long as it was wide, with a silvery or aluminum color. According to the report, the object disappeared "in much the same way as a light would vanish when extinguished." The object appeared 15 to 20 degrees above the horizon and traveled in a straight line through an arc of roughly 30 degrees.
The weather at the time was mostly clear, with a few small clouds. An Air Force intelligence report filed on August 28, 1952, described the sighting based on the witness questionnaire and investigation. The Air Force evaluation listed the case as "unknown," meaning investigators could not determine what the object was.
The case file also includes a detailed letter written in November 1954 from a second observer in North Carolina (not St. Paul) who reported seeing a different object with concentric circles of red, blue, and white light on August 9, 1952. That letter was apparently filed with this St. Paul case, though it describes a distinct sighting in a different location and with different characteristics.
