Summary
On September 18, 1955, at night, a civilian saw an object near Lake Springfield in Springfield, Illinois. The witness was a 14-year-old student watching for aircraft through Ground Observer Corps channels. The sighting lasted about 45 seconds.
The object was described as round to oval, about the size of a dime held at arm's length. It glowed between yellow, orange, and red, and was said to have a tail. The object came from the east, then made a sharp turn (about 90 degrees) to the south over the observer and disappeared rapidly over the horizon. The sky was very clear.
The Air Force concluded the sighting was possibly the exhaust of a jet aircraft.
