Project Blue Book Case File
South Newton, IowaFebruary 1956
Summary
On February 29, 1956, a 14-year-old student in South Newton, Iowa, reported seeing an unusual object while scanning the sky for aircraft. The witness described the object as round, about the size of a pea, and white in color, though it changed to various colors during the sighting. The observation lasted between four and five minutes. The object's azimuth and elevation could not be determined, and it disappeared without fading or appearing to descend.
The Air Force's investigation of this case found the available information insufficient. The case file notes that no positional data was included in the report, which limited the ability to evaluate what the witness had seen. No photographs or physical materials were recovered. The duty director offered no comment on the sighting.
The case file is a 20-page record held by the National Archives and microfilmed as T1206, Roll 24.
