Summary

On September 26, 1960, civilians at Silver Lake, near Traverse City, Michigan, reported an object at 2245 to 2300 (about 6:45 to 7:00 p.m. local), shortly after sunset. A man and his wife in a rowboat saw a long, cylindrical, somewhat cigar shaped object with a fiery red surface. It was first stationary, then accelerated swiftly in a north to south direction and climbed rapidly upward until it was no longer visible. The object was about 45 degrees above the horizon, made no sound, and had no clear tail. The sky was clear and visibility good. The wife saw it for about 5 minutes and the husband for 2 to 3 minutes. Scores of other county residents also reported it. The Air Force listed the case as a probable aircraft with sunlight reflecting off its surface.
