Project Blue Book Case File
Schenectady-Albany, N. Y., July 1957July 1957
Summary
In July 1957, observers near Schenectady and Albany, New York reported seeing an unusual object in the sky. The object was described as oval in shape, roughly the size of a dime at arm's length, and glowing white. It moved in level flight from east to west below the cloud layer and appeared to trail brown smoke or fumes as it flew.
The sighting lasted only a few seconds. Ground observers watched the object until it passed over and they lost sight of it. The object seemed to be on fire or ablaze as it moved across the sky. Weather conditions at the time included some clouds, with winds aloft varying by altitude.
The Air Force investigated the sighting and classified it as a meteor. One record card notes the observation came from Schenectady, New York, and another from Srayuna, New York (near Albany). The case file indicates the sighting was ground-based visual observation.
