Project Blue Book Case File
SAN FRANCISCO, August 1952August 1952
Summary
# Summary
In August 1952, observers at multiple military locations in California reported seeing unidentified objects in the sky. The case file contains two separate incidents, both with incomplete documentation.
The first report describes a large dial-like object observed over San Francisco on August 4, 1952 at 1045 (10:45 a.m.) Pacific Daylight Time. A civilian witness reported the sighting, but the case file provides almost no details about what the object did, how fast it moved, or how it disappeared. The Air Force's preparing officer noted that "no information is available to determine the identity of the sighted object."
A second incident, also in early August 1952, involved observers at Mather Air Force Base and McClellan Air Force Base near Sacramento. They reported seeing an orange object described as circular and resembling a flare. Control tower personnel at Sacramento tracked it heading north to northwest at an estimated altitude of 25,620 feet. Again, critical details are missing or unclear in the surviving case file.
The weather officer reported clear skies with moderate winds at altitude. No physical evidence or aircraft activity was found to explain either sighting. The Air Force's evaluation of both cases was listed as "unknown," meaning the objects could not be identified.
The case file, comprising 24 pages of declassified documents including observer questionnaires and Air Force correspondence, is reproduced below as held by the National Archives.
