Summary

On February 2, 1959, two civilians driving on the Ohio Turnpike near Sandusky, Ohio, reported an object in the sky. The sighting was about 6 p.m. local time (1100Z). The witnesses were a university professor and his wife, and they watched for about six minutes.

They first saw one yellow toward orange speck on the western horizon. It grew larger as they drove toward it and headed due south, leaving a decided yellow tail that was very straight and bright. The tail later dispersed like the trail stream of a jet. The object had an upper part shaped like the top of a sphere and a lower part that was rather flat. The witnesses also saw a conventional aircraft going the other way and closer to them than the object. The information was passed along by the FBI.

The Air Force concluded the object was probably aircraft. The record card said the flight path and duration were typical of a high altitude jet, and that the witnesses probably saw a contrail with sunlight reflecting from it.
