Summary
On March 17, 1950, a female civilian reported an object while driving between East Norwich and Roslyn, on Long Island, New York. At about 9:30 a.m. she first saw what looked like a smoke or vapor trail at very high altitude, which she thought was skywriting. The object then appeared to drop away from the trail and slowly lose altitude. As it came closer, flying from north to south, she stopped her car to watch. She described its shape as two plates placed face to face, slightly wider than it was tall.
The witness said the object then turned due west and flew out of sight without much change in altitude. She watched it for about 10 minutes, at a minimum altitude of several thousand feet. She wrote that her husband was an aeronautical engineer and that she was sure the craft was not a conventional jet, propeller plane, balloon, or parachute. She said she did not report it to any news agency.
