Summary

On July 24, 1958, a streetcar driver in Riga reported an unidentified flying object at about 0030 (12:30 a.m.) local time. The witness was leaving the streetcar depot when a fellow worker pointed it out. He described a glittering, pipe-shaped object that was metallic gray and gave off blue-gray exhaust fumes. It moved from northeast to southwest, passing overhead, and was in sight for only a few seconds before it disappeared behind buildings. No sound was heard.

The witness saw it without optical aids while the moon was shining and the city lights were blacked out for an air-raid drill. He thought it might be Sputnik. The report was prepared by U.S. Air Force interviewers. The Air Force conclusion on the Project 10073 record card was astronomical, concluding it was a meteor at high altitude. Project 10073 was the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
