Project Blue Book Case File
Ramore, Ontario, Canada, May 1953May 1953
Summary
On the morning of May 25, 1953, five U.S. Air Force airmen near Ramore, Ontario, Canada, spotted an orange, round object in the sky. The men were driving back to their base around 0415 (4:15 a.m.) when one of them noticed the object hovering near a hilltop about five miles away. The object appeared to be much larger than a star and seemed to move deliberately. As the airmen drove toward the hill for a closer look, the object began moving away from them toward the southeast, climbing steeply into the overcast sky. All five witnesses watched as the object disappeared into the clouds about fifty miles away.
The sighting lasted roughly twenty minutes. The airmen noted that the object made no sound and had a definite shape, not appearing gaseous or cloud-like. Only one witness reported seeing a trail behind the object, but all five reported seeing a bright break or gash in the clouds where it passed through. The object moved at what one witness estimated to be around 1,500 miles per hour during its departure. The weather at the time was clear with no surface winds. There were no photographs or physical evidence recovered.
An official Air Force report filed on May 26, 1953, noted that one of the observers had initially believed the object was a star. The Air Force's conclusion, as stated on the case file's opening page, was that the sighting was "characteristic of distorted interpretation of astro [astronomy]," suggesting the object was likely a star or other celestial body misinterpreted by the observers. However, the file also acknowledged "conflicting statements" among the witnesses. The full case file, consisting of 12 pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced below.
