Project Blue Book Case File
Quarryville, Penn., February 1953February 1953
Summary
On February 1, 1953, at about 9:00 p.m., a civilian saw a light in the sky near Quarryville, Pennsylvania. The witness, a farmer, was interviewed and the report was filed by an Air Force intelligence officer.
The witness's attention was drawn to an orange-red, pulsating light about 25 degrees above the horizon. The light appeared elliptical but did not seem to have a measurable size. When first seen it was hovering in the sky to the west. After about ten minutes, it moved toward the horizon, reversed to climb upward, then moved slowly toward the horizon again, dimming as it descended before disappearing. It was visible for about twenty minutes.
The witness heard no sound, and no exhaust or trail was visible. He said the light was brighter than nearby stars and did not resemble aircraft navigation or landing lights. Three other witnesses saw it but added little. One said he had seen three similar objects in the same part of the sky in recent weeks. Weather was clear with 15 miles visibility.
The record card lists the conclusion as astronomical, citing Venus.
