Porto Alegre, Brazil, December 1954December 1954
Summary
In December 1954, near Porto Alegre, Brazil, a foreign military officer reported objects in the sky. The sighting lasted about two hours. The report came through an attached intelligence document.
The source was a Brazilian Air Force major with many flying hours. He said he had once chased an object in a jet near Porto Alegre. He also described an event in which about 150 Brazilian Air Force personnel reported seeing two objects. He placed observers in separate groups and in a triangle around the field, and their reports matched. Observers reported an object hovering at an estimated 30,000 to 45,000 feet. It sped across about 80 degrees of arc, then resumed hovering. He estimated its speed at roughly 8,000 miles per hour. A second object joined it before both left at high speed. The object appeared surrounded by a white glow that grew larger when it moved.
The document said Brazilian Air Force records held earlier sightings, photographs, and pilot reports. The reporting officer wrote that he had been skeptical but no longer was, while adding that an evaluation of what the objects were and where they came from was beyond his ability.
An attached account described a man fishing in the Pardo River near Pontal, Brazil, who said an object shaped like two washbowls landed near him. He said three small men in white clothing emerged, collected samples of grass and water, then flew off vertically.
