Petersburg, IndianaJune 1956
Summary
On June 3, 1956, near Petersburg, Indiana, observers reported one object. The reports were relayed through Indianapolis air traffic control. The sightings happened around 12:23 a.m. and 12:25 a.m. local time.
One person at Petersburg reported a huge object that looked like a blow torch. It traveled from south to north at about 500 feet. He heard no noise. Another report described what first looked like a meteor traveling from southeast to northwest at about 10,000 to 12,000 feet. The object later looked like an aircraft on fire with pieces breaking off. Its speed was too fast to be a commercial aircraft.
There was also a report of a low flying aircraft, possibly an F-80, making low passes at an abandoned air strip near Evansville. The Project 10073 record card, the official record for unidentified flying object reports, concluded that the information indicated a meteor sighting, and that the aircraft was not associated with it.
