On February 3, 1953, between about 9:00 and 9:25 p.m., two airmen saw a low light over Torbay Airport near Pepperrell Air Force Base, in Newfoundland. The light resembled the landing light of an aircraft.
The two airmen watched the object until it passed below the horizon. The observation was strictly visual, with no optical aids and no radar contact. The object was in view for about 25 minutes. A radar check was negative, and the local intelligence office reported no aircraft in the area at the time.
Weather showed scattered clouds. The report was brief and gave no information on the experience level of the observers. The record noted that similar sightings in the past had been attributed to bright stars sinking below the horizon. The card lists the conclusion as possibly a star.
