Summary

On August 11, 1954, observers on a salvage vessel anchored near Yoron Island in the Pacific Ocean spotted an unusual glowing object in the night sky. The craft appeared first as a line of blue light hanging between 200 and 300 feet above the sea, about the size of a quarter held at arm's length. As it moved toward the ship, the object transformed into a circle roughly 100 feet across, still emitting that distinctive blue glow with reddish hues toward the center. The object passed directly over the vessel and then rose rapidly, punching through a thin layer of stratus clouds at 2,000 feet altitude. As it climbed through the cloud layer, observers reported that the object illuminated the clouds around it with the same blue color and appeared to agitate them violently before disappearing from sight.

The ship, the Uyemaru, was a Japanese salvage vessel owned by the Daikoku Salvage Company. The crew members who witnessed the event included the captain and at least two assistants. According to the file, the weather that night was generally clear with a moon near full and scattered cirrus clouds overhead, conditions that should have provided good visibility of the object and its movements.

An Air Force investigation compiled the witness accounts and conducted a technical evaluation of the sighting. The file notes that the moon was bright and visible through the thin cloud cover at the time of the incident. The investigators documented the object's changing shape and its apparent ability to move and maneuver with precision. However, the OCR of the file becomes quite garbled in the analysis sections, making it difficult to extract the complete reasoning behind the Air Force's final determination.

The Air Force classified this case as unknown, meaning the investigators could not identify the object as any known aircraft, weather phenomenon, or natural occurrence. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, covering 7 pages of microfilm T1206, Roll 21.
