Over Utah, February 1957February 1957

Insufficient Data

Summary

On February 4, 1957, an airline passenger flying over Utah reported a single object below the aircraft. The witness was on a flight from San Francisco to St. Louis. He did not report the sighting until 1962, when he wrote to the Air Force. The case was logged under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.

At about 1:45 a.m., the passenger saw a round, dull red object come into view under the right wing. It passed below the plane heading straight west in level flight, at a speed he compared to a passing airliner. He watched it for three or four seconds and saw no windows or openings, though he noted something like static around the edge. He estimated it was bigger than a jet tailpipe and roughly 1,000 feet below.

The Air Force noted the object could have been a passing jet. Because the case was old and the report came years later, it was evaluated as insufficient data.
