Summary

On April 10, 1958, over Birmingham, Alabama, two Foxtrot 50 pilots flying west at 31,000 feet spotted a long slender silver object ahead of their flight path approximately 50 miles away, heading north to south. The object was estimated to be at about 40,000 feet near Birmingham. It appeared as a silver streak and seemed to be dropping off and disappearing aft of the flying object, which was traveling at an extremely high rate of speed. No insignia was observed. The sighting was reported by Major Edward H. Avine, Commander, and Captain Donald J. Lang, Opns Officer, 4th Two Target Squadron, George Air Force Base, California. The Air Force evaluation is not indicated in the available documents.
