Project Blue Book Case File
OSCODA, MichiganJanuary 1954
Summary
On January 6, 1954, at about 3 p.m. GMT (about 8:23 p.m. local) near Oscoda, Michigan, an airman reported one object over Wurtsmith Air Force Base. It was watched for about 16 minutes.
The object was round, about the size of a grapefruit, and black with a lighted rim. It had no noise and no exhaust trails, and clear, sharp outlines. The airman first thought it was the moon. It was at a 28 degree angle when first seen. It stayed still for about 15 minutes, then made a turn 5 degrees up and 7 degrees to the right, then went straight away until it disappeared. He used the airfield wind indicator as a reference point.
The weather had heavy clouds and a slight breeze, with a nearby station reporting overcast and 10 miles visibility. The Air Force record lists the conclusion as insufficient data for evaluation. It noted a possible balloon, but this was not confirmed at the site, and an acting intelligence officer suggested a possible lighting effect reflecting from the overcast.
