Project Blue Book Case File
North Turner, Maine, Summer 1958Circa 1958
Summary
# North Turner, Maine, Summer 1958
In the summer of 1958, a family in North Turner, Maine reported seeing two silver-grey objects floating in the sky for more than five minutes. The witnesses watched the objects through field glasses and said the lights were so bright they resembled a welder's torch. One object had a bluish-white light with a hint of red. The lights pulsated rather than blinked, and the objects had a dull finish and sharply defined outlines.
According to the report, a family member noticed low-flying lights first and initially feared a plane was in trouble because there was no motor sound. The witness called the Air Force field and later the Civil Defense to report the sighting. The lights moved erratically from right to left across the sky, and additional lights appeared later. The witnesses observed what looked like two rows of lights moving away together. The objects disappeared with tremendous speed.
The Air Force file notes that information about this sighting was received in 1965, nearly seven years after the event. The report was forwarded by Raymond E. Fowler of a local UFO group. The Air Force judged the report unreliable because it was secondhand and too old for investigation at the time. However, the file notes that the case would be reopened if photographs of the objects were submitted for evaluation. No photographs appear in the declassified materials.
