Project Blue Book Case File
North Korea, June 1953June 1953
Summary
On June 9, 1953, about 2345 (11:45 p.m.) local time, military observers saw an object over North Korea. The witnesses were forward artillery observers of an Army field artillery battalion.
The object was first seen over a map grid point at an estimated height of 15,000 feet on an easterly heading. It was watched from about 7,000 yards for about four minutes, both by eye and through an artillery range finder. The object looked spherical and was a fluorescent gray or silver color. No propulsion or exhaust was seen.
The object appeared to spin and fly an erratic path. It circled the area for about four minutes. Several times it seemed to almost stop, clearly slowing down, then speed up again. It was last seen moving fast and disappearing to the northwest. The Air Force listed the case as a balloon, suggesting it may have been a lighted balloon launched by enemy front-line troops.
