Project Blue Book Case File
NORFOLK MASS, July 1952July 1952
Summary
Three prison guards at Norfolk Prison Colony in Massachusetts reported seeing an unusual object on the night of July 23, 1952. At approximately 2105 hours (9:05 p.m.), they watched a greenish, round object flying slowly at low altitude. The object appeared flat and tilted. It moved from north to south across the prison grounds before disappearing behind one of the buildings. The guards heard a loud rushing noise that seemed to follow the object. The sighting lasted between two and five seconds.
The object was estimated to be three to five feet in diameter and flew at an altitude of fifty to one hundred feet, about fifty to two hundred and twenty-five feet away from the observers. The night was clear with no moon, but visibility was good. The Air Force interviewed each guard at his home. All three had worked at the prison for many years and had prior military service. Investigators found no evidence of weather conditions or other factors that could explain the sighting. No physical evidence was collected, and no photographs were available.
The Air Force contacted Boston Army Base on July 23 and notified Boston's Office of Special Investigations. The case file indicates no further investigation was pursued by the Boston Army district. The Air Force's conclusion on what the object was appears unclear in the available records.
The full case file, comprising 25 pages of reports, questionnaires, and correspondence, is reproduced below as held by the National Archives.
