Project Blue Book Case File
Newton, OhioJune 1960
Summary
On the night of June 27, 1960, a bright object was observed from Newton, Ohio. The witness sat in a parked car and watched the object for about one and a half hours. It appeared as a light that was brighter than the brightest stars. The object changed color several times, shifting from white to green, then red and rust. One side of the object featured finger-like projections. The object occasionally faded and reappeared.
The Air Force investigated by checking the object's location and timing against known astronomical phenomena. The analysis concluded that the object was the planet Jupiter. According to the file, a haze layer in the atmosphere was probably responsible for the flickering appearance and the color changes the witness observed. Checks on subsequent nights indicated that Jupiter was in the location described by the witness and confirmed as the probable cause of the sighting.
