Summary

On April 5, 1956, a civilian at Newport, Rhode Island, reported one object. The report came in by letter and was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.

The witness said the object was circular and about the size of a large grapefruit at arm's length. It was silver. It appeared in the north at an azimuth of about 350 degrees and at an angle of about 45 degrees. The object disappeared by whirling into the haze. It was seen through binoculars. Visibility was unlimited with no surface wind. The sighting lasted about five minutes.

The Air Force concluded the sighting was possibly a weather balloon. The record said the description and color matched piball balloons released on clear days.
