Project Blue Book Case File
New York, N. Y., August 1952August 1952
Summary
On August 26, 1952, a white, round light was spotted above New York City. The object appeared stationary in the sky and gave off red and blue flashes.
An observer in Manhattan reported seeing the light around 7:25 a.m. The witness estimated the object was about thirty feet across and roughly ten thousand feet high. They watched it for about an hour using field glasses. Later the same morning, another observer at a ground observation post saw the object five miles away. An Air Force fighter was scrambled to intercept the object, but the pilot searched the area for forty-five minutes and saw nothing.
The Air Force checked weather conditions and found clear skies with good visibility that morning. No sound was reported from a distance. The cause of the sighting was listed as unknown in the case file, though the initial report card suggested the object was probably a balloon.
