Summary
On October 21, 1957, at 9:13 p.m. near North Luffenham, England, a Royal Air Force pilot flying at 28,000 feet encountered an unidentified object with six lights. The pilot took evasive action as the object approached from the side. When the aircraft's lights came on, the object vanished. The pilot estimated his aircraft was directly over a balloon at 32 degrees 11 minutes north, 21 degrees 30 minutes east, near an atom-bomber training base. Ground radar at RAF Langford confirmed the object at approximately 23,000 feet. A preliminary check of military and civil aircraft movements showed no other traffic in the area at the time. The Air Ministry investigated but deemed there was insufficient data for evaluation.
