Project Blue Book Case File
Muskogee, Oklahoma, Summer 1953Circa 1953
Summary
In the summer of 1953, a man employed by the U.S. Post Office in Tulsa, Oklahoma took a photograph of an unidentified flying object near Muskogee. He had been walking near a restaurant when he spotted the object glinting in the sun. Using a Super Kodak camera he carried with him, he snapped a picture. The witness estimated the object was traveling at 300 to 500 miles per hour at an altitude of 6,000 to 7,000 feet. He described it as roughly 75 to 80 feet across, completely silent, and moving in a southerly direction. The object remained in his view for only a few seconds.
The witness reported that the day had been bright and sunny with a few white clouds. He had set his camera shutter speed at 1/500 of a second with an f-stop of 2.8. According to his account, the negative was later obtained from Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York. In the photograph, the object appeared reasonably clear with no blurring evident, though some trees in the background showed minimal detail.
The Air Force's Office of Special Investigations evaluated the photograph as a possible hoax. The report noted that the lack of any blur in the image, combined with other circumstances surrounding the report and incident, suggested the photograph's validity was doubtful. No definitive conclusion about the object's identity appears in the available case file, which consists of 8 pages as held by the National Archives.
