Summary

On June 13, 1963, at night, an air policeman reported a light near Misawa Air Base, Japan. The witness was Airman Robert J. O'Connor, a military observer with the air police. The case was recorded in Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.

The object looked like a round aircraft landing light, white changing to a green tint. It was seen about 250 yards south of the base tower. It moved side to side in a small arc for several seconds, then rose suddenly and faded out as it climbed. The whole sighting lasted about 3 to 4 minutes.

The weather was hazy with several temperature inversions, including one near the surface. A green and white beacon flashed over the area. The Air Force concluded the sighting was a balloon. It said the haze, the inversions, and reflections of the beacon light on a balloon likely caused the report. The case was evaluated as a weather balloon.
