Summary
On February 12, 1953, at about 10:32 p.m. local time, an observer reported a light near Nemuro, in northern Japan, in a report from an aircraft control and warning squadron near Misawa. The source was not named.
The object flashed red, green, and white, similar to a navigation light. It was first seen about 1 degree above the horizon, on a bearing of about 252 degrees from the station. Over a period of about 5 to 12 minutes, it climbed to 15 or 20 degrees above the horizon, then came back down to about 1 degree before it disappeared. Its speed and direction could not be determined.
The sighting lasted about 15 minutes and was visual only. A nearby air detachment was contacted but reported no visual light, and there was no radar observation. A detailed report was to follow.
The record notes the object setting toward the horizon and that the climb was attributed to an illusion or refraction. The card lists the conclusion as astronomical, citing Venus.
