Summary

On December 31, 1953, at about 7 p.m. local time near Miami, Florida, a civilian pilot reported one object. The sighting was made from an aircraft in flight at about 6,500 feet, heading 270 degrees at 135 knots. The object was watched for about five minutes.

The object appeared as a white light ahead of and above the aircraft. The pilot could not make out details and seemed to be overtaking it. The object kept a constant altitude. As the aircraft drew near, the object veered right and its light went out for several seconds, then it veered left and disappeared behind the aircraft. There was no shape and no sound that could be made out.

The sky was clear with 12 miles visibility. The report was received as a routine sighting message. The Air Force record lists the conclusion as a balloon, describing a balloon with a light attached as seen from an aircraft at night.
