Summary

On January 1, 1954, at about 12:15 a.m. GMT near Melbourne, Australia, a civilian airline pilot reported one object. The pilot saw it from his house in a suburb of Melbourne. The object was in sight for about ten seconds.

The object was metallic and mushroom shaped, flying below the minimum safe altitude. It appeared about eight times as large as a C-4 aircraft. It seemed to have an observation car hung underneath it. Although the pilot was sure it was metal, he reported that light occasionally shot through it as if it were made of celluloid. It traveled north at an estimated 700 miles per hour.

The Air Force record lists the conclusion as aircraft. The card noted that, with the detail described, an object truly moving at 700 miles per hour would be visible longer than ten seconds, and that much data was missing. Australian civil aviation officials said many other sightings had been reported and were being investigated.
