Project Blue Book Case File
Mansfield, OhioFebruary 1959
Summary
On February 12, 1959, a civilian in Mansfield, Ohio, reported unusual lines in the sky and took photographs. The sighting was about 4:15 p.m. (1134Z) and lasted less than a minute. The witness watched from a house window.
The observer first saw a jet aircraft pass overhead leaving a vapor trail. Then he noticed two more objects that seemed to cut two swaths through a layer of clouds, exposing blue sky. The three lines appeared parallel at first. By the time he got cameras, high wind had distorted the lines. He sent color and black and white photos to the Air Force.
The Air Force concluded the case was contrails. Analysts said there was no reason not to assume the white streak across the sky was a vapor trail. They could not fully explain the two dark streaks but suggested they might be shadows of the vapor trail cast on lower cloud layers.
