Project Blue Book Case File
LUBBOCK, TEXASAugust 1952
Summary
On August 2, 1952, a man in Lubbock, Texas watched a spherical, metallic object hanging motionless in the sky for six minutes. The object was about 24 inches across and had no visible tail or exhaust. At 0857 hours (8:57 a.m.), it suddenly moved straight east and disappeared into a cloud bank. The man timed the entire movement, which took 16 seconds from the moment it began to move until it vanished. The object made no sound.
The witness was interviewed by a U.S. Air Force intelligence officer from nearby Reese Air Force Base. The officer noted that the witness was well educated, highly intelligent, and sincere in his account. The witness said he was very familiar with weather balloons and believed the object was definitely not a balloon of any kind. When Air Force investigators checked with Reese AFB and Lubbock Municipal Airport, they found that B-25 and L-5 type aircraft were in the general area at the time of the sighting, but the witness's description did not match any known aircraft.
The weather that morning was clear with scattered clouds at 30,000 feet. The temperature was 78 degrees and visibility was 15 miles. Investigators found no meteorological activity that would explain the sighting. No physical evidence, photographs, or fragments were recovered. No aircraft were scrambled to intercept the object, and no ground radar confirmation was obtained.
The Air Force evaluated the object as unidentified. The file contains 7 scanned pages as held by the National Archives.
