Insufficient Data

Summary

On November 22, 1957, a mining engineer near Point Eugenia in Lower California, Mexico sighted a slender, missile-like object traveling at high speed. The object was heading roughly south-southeast at approximately 110 degrees on a compass. The witness reported that the object appeared to be at an extreme altitude and was visible for about eight minutes, with a clear view lasting roughly two minutes. Based on the drawing the witness provided, the Air Force noted the sighting resembled a missile and speculated it may have crashed inland in the general vicinity of 113 degrees west, 25 degrees north.

The Air Force was asked to check for any military aircraft or naval fleet activity in the area, particularly missile test firings that might explain what the witness saw. However, the official evaluation form noted several problems with the report: it described the sighting as possibly unreliable, mentioned no known missile activity in the region, and flagged inconsistencies in the witness account and insufficient data to reach a firm conclusion. The case was classified as "Insufficient Data for Evaluation," meaning investigators could not determine what the object was.

The file contained 30 pages of declassified case materials held at the National Archives.
