Summary

On September 9, 1955, at about 0340Z, a civilian ground observer watching for aircraft saw a light near Lowell, Michigan. The contractor observer reported the object for about three minutes.

The witness described one round, red, flashing light about the size of a basketball held at arm's length. It flew a straight and level course and then gradually faded into the weather. The angle of elevation was about 17 degrees. Winds were calm with light rain and a thin overcast. No aircraft were known to be in the area.

The Air Force concluded the sighting was an aircraft. Officers noted that the flashing red light, the duration, and the straight and level course suggested an aircraft.
