Project Blue Book Case File
Loogootee, IndianaOctober 1955
Summary
On October 8, 1955, at about 1638 (4:38 p.m.), two civilians saw an object near Loogootee, Indiana. The main witness was a U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot employee and former Navy quartermaster who was installing a television antenna. They watched the object from about one mile north of town.
The object was described as round and solid, silver or white in color, and about the size of a medium-to-large transport or bomber aircraft. It flew straight and level, heading east-southeast, at an estimated altitude of 5,000 feet. Its speed was estimated at more than 1,000 miles per hour. It made no sound and left no visible trail and was watched for about 10 to 15 seconds. The day was extremely clear with no clouds and no surface wind.
The witness, described as reliable, said the object was definitely not any airplane he had ever seen. The Air Force concluded the case was unidentified, noting that the daylight sighting ruled out a meteor.
