Summary

On the evening of September 22-23, 1955, residents near Lodi, Ohio reported seeing unidentified objects in the sky. The sightings began around 10:15 p.m. when a resident called to alert others to look southeast. Over the next hour or so, multiple witnesses reported seeing a round, blue-gray object about the size of a grapefruit held at arm's length, orbiting in the sky at low altitude. Two witnesses heard faint explosion-like sounds resembling firecrackers, accompanied by bright reddish-orange flashes from the object.

The lead witness was Rose M. Presznick, a supervisor for the Ground Observer Corps (a civilian aircraft spotting program) and respected community member. She watched the object for about 25 minutes as it moved from the southeast to the southwest, then vanished suddenly. Another witness, a man with prior Air Force experience, observed what appeared to be a larger object with a smaller object near it, following a regular circular pattern that completed one orbit every minute and fifteen seconds. He watched for 45 minutes and estimated the main object at about 20 feet in diameter. A third witness corroborated some details but her account was deemed less reliable due to her recent heart surgery and heavy influence from her mother's observations.

The Air Force investigator examined several possible explanations. The Akron Municipal Airport, about 30 miles away, operated a rotating beacon and two large searchlights that evening for advertising purposes. Investigation revealed that the Columbia Chemical Works in nearby Barberton produced large clouds and haze formations that had historically caused strange optical effects and reflections. The investigator concluded that the primary objects observed were likely searchlight beams projecting onto clouds and overcast sky, with one possible conventional aircraft passing overhead. The notes on the case file indicate skepticism toward some witnesses' reliability, though they were deemed intelligent and earnest observers.
