Lihue, Kauai, T.H., January 1951January 1951
Summary
On January 18, 1951, about 6:30 p.m., civilians reported a silvery disc hovering over the vicinity of Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii. The report is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The source was a newspaper account.
The witnesses included county officials who said they spotted the silvery disc from the window of an office. They said visibility was excellent and the object appeared against the blue sky. The disc was described as silvery in color, hovering then moving at slow speed, with no sound and no size given. One observer drove home for a telescope, but by the time he returned the disc had started moving and was lost in a cloud formation. The observers agreed the object seemed controlled but could not say how it was powered. The account noted this was the third such report over Kauai since Christmas Eve.
The Air Force listed its conclusion as insufficient data, noting positional data was not given and it was a possible balloon.
