Project Blue Book Case File
Lakewood, OhioSeptember 1958
Summary
On September 14, 1958 (15/0310Z), a civilian observer in Lakewood, Ohio, near Cleveland, reported an unidentified flying object at night. The witness, who was looking at the stars, noticed an object over a neighbor's roof. It looked like a star the size of a golf ball, yellowish in color with a glow like the sun seen through dark glasses. It seemed to hover and slowly rise, moving to the east and northeast, but not very far. The object climbed from 30 to 45 degrees above the horizon and was still visible when the report was called in. The sighting lasted about 45 minutes.
Weather was clear. The report was relayed through the Cleveland air traffic control center. The Air Force conclusion on the Project 10073 record card was astronomical, noting the observer probably saw the star Capella, which was at about 20 degrees elevation rising toward the east. Project 10073 was the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
