Summary

On October 5, 1952, at 5:12 p.m., a former Royal Air Force officer standing on the deck of the Cunard liner Caronia saw a round, brilliant white object in the sky off the coast of Kent, England. The ship was at sea, roughly 400 miles west-southwest of the British Isles. The object appeared to be flat and disk-shaped, with its face pointed directly toward the witness. It was very bright, nearly as intense as a welding torch, with a strong silver color that stood out sharply against the pale pink twilight sky.

The witness observed the object for one minute and forty-five seconds. During that time, he watched it carefully, timing the sighting and calling for field glasses to examine it more closely. Several other people on the ship, standing nearby on deck, also saw the object. The object appeared to hover beyond a small pink cloud located about five miles from the ship, though the witness noted he could not be entirely certain whether it moved closer to or farther from the vessel. After roughly one minute and forty-five seconds, the object faded gradually from view. The diameter of the bright disk did not appear to shrink during this fading, giving the witness the impression that the light simply switched off rather than the object moving away.

The Air Force received the case details through a formal incident report filed by an RAF base in England. The witness, a trained observer with considerable aviation experience, estimated the object's speed at around 1,500 miles per hour based on its apparent motion. Weather conditions at the time were generally clear, with visibility of thirteen miles and a temperature of 57 degrees Fahrenheit. The Air Force evaluation initially marked the sighting as "unknown," though the case summary later suggested the short duration of the sighting and the apparent exhaust or tail indicated the object might have been a meteor.
