Project Blue Book Case File
KANSAS CITY MO, July 1952July 1952
Summary
On the night of July 21, 1952, a driver in Kansas City, Missouri saw something in the sky that caught his attention. As he drove east on Highway 45 around 9:15 p.m., a very bright white object appeared above him. He described it as more than three times brighter than the brightest star visible and said it looked similar to Venus when viewed through a telescope. The object traveled from north to south at approximately 580 knots (about 667 miles per hour) and stayed visible for roughly 38 seconds before disappearing from sight.
The driver was not alone in his observation. Two women in Kansas City, Missouri saw the same object at the same time and gave the same description of its appearance and duration. These accounts became part of a broader wave of UFO sightings across the Northeast that summer.
The case file also contains reports from Holyoke, Massachusetts of three people who observed a round, orange-yellow object in the sky after midnight on July 21-22, and again around 10 p.m. on July 22. The object reportedly flashed downward and disappeared behind buildings. Investigators interviewed the witnesses and noted the weather was clear with light winds at the time.
As part of the investigation, Air Force officials looked into possible explanations. They learned that fireworks were set off every Tuesday during July at Mountain Park in Holyoke at 10:50 p.m., complete with aerial bombs and rocket displays that could reach heights of 540 feet. The investigators found the fireworks display could potentially account for some of the Holyoke sightings. However, the Office of Special Investigations concluded that no physical evidence existed and no further action was needed.
