Summary

On April 14, 1960, a civilian saw a burning object in the sky near Jeffersonville, Indiana. The time was about 1:45 a.m. The witness was a fire inspector driving north on a road near the city.

The object entered his view and traveled from left to right while descending in an arc. It looked six to eight times longer than it was wide. It was mostly pale green, but the leading part showed changing colors from red to brown. Its light grew very bright and then dimmed, and its shape seemed to change. The witness watched it for about seven to eight seconds before it disappeared above the horizon. He saw no explosion or impact. He said sparks seemed to trail off the object like falling fireworks. Two women and a man riding with him also saw it.

This report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force concluded the description was characteristic of a fireball.
