Summary

On January 10, 1953, at 11:02 a.m., a ground observer named Mr. J.L. Rittenhouse reported sighting a slow, fan-shaped object flying southwest of his home in Hopkins, Minnesota. Rittenhouse used a powerful telescope and binoculars to observe the object. He stated the object was 15 miles long, star-like in appearance, and changed from brilliant to dull. The pointed end of the fan-shaped object pointed downward and looked like a pillar of light. The object disappeared beyond the horizon. Rittenhouse stated the object did not resemble any type of plane. The Air Force concluded the sighting was a possible astro (star/planet) setting, but noted that however data did not reliably confirm or positional data.
