Summary

On the night of October 10, 1958, a civilian missile engineer reported an object near Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, in the Alamogordo area. He viewed it through binoculars for about six minutes.

The object was cigar-shaped with a fan-shaped tail and four pinpoint lights on the side like portholes. It hovered about 10 degrees above the horizon, then vanished over the San Andres Mountains. A local news report carried the account, and the Air Force asked the base to investigate because such reports drew public attention.

The witness was interviewed and later said he had been in error. He stated that what he saw was an F-106 aircraft flying out of Holloman Air Force Base. Further investigation confirmed this. The Air Force concluded the object was an aircraft, with the lights being the sun's reflection on the aircraft's contrails. This case is part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
