Project Blue Book Case File
Harmon AFB, Newfoundland, May 1953May 1953
Summary
On May 4, 1953, around 0150Z, a civilian saw an object in the sky over Ernest Harmon Air Force Base in Newfoundland. The witness was a Canadian woman who asked to stay anonymous. She was sitting outside the post office when a whistling noise made her look up.
The object was shaped like a football or an egg. She said it was about four feet long and a foot or two thick. Its color looked like light metal or tin. It first appeared as a streak. It became visible when it passed through the beam of a rotating beacon, then it looked like a shadow. It flew fast and low and was in view for only two or three seconds before a building blocked her view.
No lights or trails were seen. The noise sounded like pieces of tin striking each other. Weather was broken clouds at about 1700 feet with 15 miles of visibility. Officers checked aircraft flight plans and weather balloons, and neither matched the report. The Air Force listed the case as a bird sighting, noting the short duration and low altitude.
