Harlowtown, Mont, August 1954August 1954
Summary
On the night of August 17, 1954, a bright object was reported near Harlowtown, Montana. The main witness was a local medical doctor, along with several other witnesses described as reliable.
The object looked like a large, bright star. It moved very slowly and seemed to disappear and reappear in a different position. It changed colors often but kept a glowing orange rim. The doctor watched it visually and then through a 20 power spotting scope. It was seen at about 30 degrees above the horizon. The sky was clear with some scattered clouds. The object was watched for about an hour before it gradually faded out. There was no physical evidence.
The Air Force record listed the conclusion as astronomical, with a note that the description fit the planet Mars. The case was filed as part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
