Hansville, WashingtonAugust 1949
Summary
On the evening of August 28, 1949, four civilians near Hansville, Washington, reported seeing flying discs. The sighting happened about 6 p.m., between roughly 6:00 and 6:30. Two married couples watched from a home, looking out a large window to the north. They saw the objects for about one and a half to two minutes.
The witnesses said they saw up to three objects flying horizontally at about 10,000 feet, roughly one to one and a half miles to the north. The objects appeared flat, like a silver dollar, and made of aluminum or stainless steel, about 25 to 30 feet across. They had no projections, fins, or moving parts and made no sound. The objects seemed to turn slowly with no clear purpose, then faded from view. One witness noted a brief streak of smoke during a turn.
The report says the weather was clear with visibility of at least 20 miles. No scheduled flights and no test devices were reported in the area at that time. However, a large weather balloon had been released by the Sand Point Weather Station in Seattle between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. that day. On the Air Force record for unidentified flying object reports (Project 10073), the conclusion was balloon.
