Insufficient Data

Summary

On a February afternoon in 1953, a civilian near Hamptonville, North Carolina, reported seeing an unidentified object in the sky. The observer reported that the object was visible for a limited time and appeared to be moving at a high altitude at a high rate of speed. The sighting occurred during daylight hours and was observed with the naked eye.

The Air Force received the report and sent a technical questionnaire to the witness to gather detailed information about the sighting. The witness completed the form and provided additional written description and sketches. According to the witness's account, the object was observed in the sky above Hamptonville, and the witness attempted to document its appearance, movement, and estimated size and distance.

The Air Force's Air Technical Intelligence Center reviewed the case on April 21, 1953. Based on the available information, the center concluded that there was insufficient data for evaluation, though the report noted that the object could possibly have been a balloon.
