Project Blue Book Case File
Green Castle, Ind., January 1958January 1958
Summary
On January 10, 1958, a civilian in Green Castle, Indiana, reported seeing two silver objects flying together in formation. The witness described them as roughly the size of a medium aircraft, with an unusual appearance: each object looked like an inverted saucer stacked on top of another inverted saucer. The two objects flew in a southern direction and stayed in view for about five minutes before disappearing.
The witness said the objects were flying at roughly 5,000 feet altitude. The observer heard sounds similar to other aircraft in the area, which initially drew their attention to the sky. The objects maintained a straight flight path until they went out of sight. Weather conditions at the time included clear skies with northeast surface winds.
The U.S. Air Force investigated the sighting and identified the objects as a Navy WF-2 radar plane that was in the area at the time. The WF-2 was a military transport aircraft modified to carry radar equipment for weather reconnaissance and tracking purposes. The plane's distinctive shape and silver finish matched the witness description well enough for the Air Force to conclude the sighting had been solved.
