Summary
On February 21, 1953, starting around 2120 (9:20 p.m.), several people reported a colorful light in the sky near Green Bay, Wisconsin. The witnesses were varied civilian observers, including a ground observer post supervisor and family members who phoned in.
The object was northeast of Sturgeon Bay, about 12 degrees above the horizon. It changed colors, showing white, red, and flashes of green. It slowly moved away to the west and was out of sight in about 30 minutes. Its size was compared to a street light a few blocks away. One witness compared it to a car tail light. Military personnel at a nearby detachment also went outside and saw it low above the horizon. The total observation lasted about two hours.
The Air Force noted the object was seen for a long time with little movement. It concluded the cause was astronomical, the bright star Arcturus.
